When 38-year old Shrikant Bakshi successfully defended the men’s singles title without dropping a game at the Pt Tirath Memorial badminton,it was another reminder of the falling standards of the game in the Capital. Having tested every water though, the former India no 1 is now eyeing a career in coaching.

On Thursday,Bakshi demolished Amit Sharma in the final, with the scoreline of 21-14 21-12 reflecting conviction and ease. Competing in professional badminton to keep physically fit and to stay in shape,Bakshi showed great on-court agility for a 38-year-old.

“I’ve been planning on opening my own academy for youngsters for sometime now. But there have been a lot of hurdles on the way, mainly locating a suitable hall,” Bakshi said.

‘Early spot’
While peers such as Pullela Gopichand and Vijaydeep Singh have been coaching at the national level,Bakshi made it clear that he will prefer to spot talent at an early age and nurture youngsters.

“I am not looking for a job at the national level. I would want to open an academy for young children. This will help me groom them right from their formative stages. I think it is a very exciting prospect,” Bakshi said.

With a coaching career well on the cards,Bakshi, however, claims that it would not signal the end of his playing days. “I will continue to play in the local circuit to stay fit,” he said, adding,“Even once the coaching begins,I will challenge myself against the youngsters.”
