The death of 15 civilians over a period of two days on the accident-prone Sohna road has spurred the Gurgaon authorities to take remedial measures.

Traffic personnel as well as the city police department have decided to take stringent measures to prevent such mishaps from occurring again. While traffic department officials visited the stretch to ascertain the problems on the road, the city police also issued instructions to various police stations in the area to keep an eye out for vehicles that overload on passengers and goods. “I have conveyed my instructions to station house officers (SHOs) of the area through the DCP,asking them to be extra vigilant against overloading. I have asked them to take strict action against those flouting rules such as heavy vehicle restrictions, overspeeding and overloading. We are trying to strengthen the system,so these incidents do not occur in the future,” Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar Mittal said.

The Traffic Police,on the other hand, has decided to position the two mobile interceptors on the road. At the same time, personnel from the traffic department will be stationed on the road. They will challan motorists who drive dangerously.

“Our teams will collaborate with SHOs to check rash driving and issue challans. An interceptor will also be stationed there. There are a lot of issues on that road, which need to be rectified,” DCP (Traffic) Bharti Arora said.

Eight persons were killed and 13 seriously injured during a road mishap on Sohna road on Monday. A dumper that tried to overtake a truck hit the latter which,in turn, jumped the divider and turned turtle — falling on a passing tempo.

A similar incident had occurred on March 21 when seven people, including three of a family, were killed when the shared auto-rickshaw they were travelling in collided head-on with a dumper on the same road near Tavru.

During an inspection conducted on Tuesday,Traffic officials noticed vehicles taking u-turns through gaps in the divider. Also, the complete lack of hedges on the dividers was blinding motorists coming from the other side.
