Four people, including two BSF personnel, died and nine others were reported injured when a private tourist bus jumped lanes on the Bus Rapid Transit corridor and rammed three vehicles on Sunday night.

Four people, including two BSF personnel, died and nine others were reported injured when a private tourist bus jumped lanes on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor and rammed three vehicles on Sunday night.

Among the injured are seven BSF personnel, the police said. The accident was reported near the DDA park in Greater Kailash-I around 11 pm,the police said.

The BSF personnel were coming in a Swaraj Mazda van from Meerut after attending a recruitment programme and were headed for the BSF camp at Tigri, near Sangam Vihar in South Delhi. They were to go to BSF camp at Chhawla, near Najafgarh, from there.

According to police, the driver of a private tourist bus (registration number DL1 TB 7601) crossed three lanes before hitting three vehicles — the Swaraj Mazda van (DL1 V 4725) carrying BSF personnel,a motorcycle, and a scooter.

The deceased have been identified as BSF Deputy Commandant Deepak Mehra,33,driver of the van Ravinder Singh Chandel,Sanjay (on motorcycle) and Sunder Lal,an Income Tax employee who was riding the scooter.

“The bus was going towards Defence Colony and the BSF van,the scooter and motorcycle were going towards Chirag Dilli flyover when the bus jumped over from the other side and hit them,” an investigating officer said.

After 11 pm,when the bus lane is closed, all traffic, including heavy vehicles, run on the general lane. The officer said,“The bus first crossed its own lane divider, then dividers of the middle lane (dedicated for buses),and went on to hit the three moving vehicles on the opposite general lane.”

Pillion rider on the motorbike, one Indrajeet, was injured.

According to the investigating officer, only one person, identified as Balwant, was found in the bus — he is admitted in hospital.

“We believe Balwant was driving the bus,” the officer said. “We are verifying whether he had a driving licence,or whether he was the driver’s helper or cleaner.” The medico-legal certificate has clarified that Balwant was not drunk, the officer said.

A senior officer said the police received a call about the accident at 11.15 pm. “There was a traffic jam on the entire BRT stretch for about an hour, and about 70 policemen from different stations cleared the spot,” the officer said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Virender Singh Chahel said a case under IPC Section 304A (causing death by negligence) has been registered at Greater Kailash police station.

According to the investigating officer, the bus was a tourist liner belonging to one Punja Sahib transport company. “We are investigating whether Balwant had a licence,” the officer said. “Action will be taken against the bus owner if it emerges Balwant was a cleaner or helper.”
