Abducted boy returns as cops close in

Ten-year-old Vikas could not comprehend why his family was overjoyed to see him as he returned home after watching a film and spending the day with his uncle.

Ten-year-old Vikas could not comprehend why his family was overjoyed to see him as he returned home after watching a film and spending the day with his uncle.

The Class IV student did not know that he was,in fact, kidnapped by his uncle who had asked for Rs 5 lakh as ransom, while Vikas watched My Name is Khan, and later decided to release the boy after he got to know that the police were closing in on him.

The police claimed to have arrested three persons — Shravan Kumar (Vikas’s father’s cousin),Rahul and his wife Anita — in Gurgaon on Sunday in connection with the abduction.

On February 19,around 3.30 pm Vikas left his home in Patel Nagar,Old Gurgaon, for tuitions when Kumar asked the boy to come with him.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anil Dhawan said,“Kumar told Vikas that they would go for a movie. On the way,Kumar was joined by his accomplices Rahul and his wife Anita. All of them went to Ansal Plaza in SM Plaza in Palam Vihar.”

The police said while Anita took Vikas with her for the film, the two men stayed behind. Vikas’s family received the first ransom call around 5 pm,the police said.

“It was a brief call in which Rahul informed them that their son had been abducted and demanded Rs 5 lakh for his return,” the police said.

Worried,Vikas’s father Hem Narayan called the police who started the process of tracing the location from where the abductors had made the phone call.

After the movie ended, the kidnappers called Narayan for the second time — this time he heard his son call out his name, the police said.

“They (the abductors) told me to take the train from Gurgaon to Palam Vihar at 8.30 in the morning and throw the bag containing Rs 5 lakh near the Dhanavpur stop,” Narayan told the police.

The police, meanwhile, managed the trace the call to the mall. “We went to the mall and checked the CCTV footage and identified the abductors. They panicked when they came to know that we knew who had kidnapped the boy,” Dhawan said on Monday.

Around midnight on February 19,after spending over eights hours with his kidnappers,Vikas returned home, the police said. Vikas told the police that he was dropped off a short distance away by his abductors.

The police said Rahul and Anita are from Bihar and worked in an embroidery unit with Kumar. The three have been charged for kidnapping for ransom.

According to the police, they had planned the kidnapping 15 days ago as they thought Vikas’s father was well off.
