IN A fresh jolt to the Aam Aadmi Party, its Chhatarpur MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar joined the BJP Wednesday along with four other party leaders.

Delhi’s former social welfare minister Raaj Kumar Anand, who quit the AAP in April to join the BSP subsequently — and contested the Lok Sabha polls from New Delhi constituency — also joined the BJP.

Tanwar, a two-time AAP MLA who joined the party in 2014, said he was happy to be part of the BJP.

“I have been working in the social and political field for the past 25 years… but today I feel very sad looking at the situation in Delhi. I had joined the AAP with a lot of hope, but the condition of the city under the AAP in the last one year has changed for the worse due to corruption such as liquor scams,” he said.

“This party which was born out of a movement against corruption has sunk in corruption today,” alleged Tanwar, who was in the BJP before switching to the AAP.

He said the purpose with which he had joined the AAP has not been fulfilled by the party.

“The people of Delhi were crying for water in peak summer for the past three months and whenever we raised the issue to the ministers, they blamed the L-G, Modi ji and Haryana Government. But did nothing from the government side to resolve the issue,” he said.

Tanwar, who holds a diploma in engineering as per his election affidavit, also criticised the “dictatorship of AAP ministers and their policies”, which he said were responsible for Delhi’s present condition.

Incidentally, just six hours before joining the BJP, Tanwar had in a post on Facebook taken a stand against the BJP over the mass transfer of Delhi government school teachers.

Anand, who joined the BJP from the BSP, alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal government is “mired” in corruption and is against Dalits.

Senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj meanwhile accused the BJP of trying to break opposition parties by imposing false cases against their leaders and pressuring them.

“Kartar Singh Tanwar ji was my colleague till two hours ago… BJP has changed the politics of the country so much that now you can arm-twist any political person and make him do anything…,” he said.

“Everyone knows in 2016, income tax raids were conducted on Kartar and the BJP government’s I-T department said that they found unaccounted cash worth Rs 130 crore… The sword of the central government must have been hanging over Kartar too,” he said.

“Which common person would want to get into court cases and go to jail… Tomorrow, they may transfer the I-T case to ED… BJP with its conspiracy has been trying to scare several of our MLAs with fake cases, some come under pressure. We understand their compulsion…”
