The setting seemed just perfect for the momentous occasion when Delhis yesteryear heroes assembled at the Purana Villa for a Saturday night party. It was 30 years ago that Delhi won their first Ranji Trophy and everyone went nostalgic about it as Venkat Sundaram played host to a celebration.
Bishen Singh Bedi, the captain under whom the team won the trophy in 1978-79 was joined by teammates Madan Lal who took eight wickets in the final against Karnataka,Surinder Khanna, who scored a century in both innings of that game,Chetan Chauhan,Sunil Valson,Rakesh Shukla,Arun Khurana and Kirti Azad. Mohinder Amarnath and his brother Surinder, both of whom scored a hundred, could not make it to the function along with Arun Lal because of prior commitments.
Adding glitter to the party was Tiger Pataudi,Maninder Singh,Atul Wassan,Rajinder Goel,Vivek Razdan,Gursharan Singh,Ajay Sharma,Vinay Lamba, and Praveen Oberoi to make it the largest gathering of cricketers in the Capital.
With the DDCA president Arun Jaitley also present, one could only hope that these illustrious cricketers will have some role to play in Delhi cricket. Jaitley gave away small replicas of the Ranji Trophy to each winning member and also invited them for a separate felicitation ceremony on behalf of DDCA.
