A 9-year-old boy from Rohini died of Dengue Shock Syndrome at Lok Nayak hospital on Monday, making it the years second death. So far,262 cases of dengue viral fever have been reported from the city.
Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) is the most severe form of the viral fever and is considered dangerous especially in children. Dengue shock syndrome is common among children and the mortality rate is as high as 30 per cent. The patient was admitted at LN Hospital and died early Friday morning, informed Dr N K Yadav,Municipal health officer,MCD.
The child,Sunny, was a resident of Pappu Colony and had been admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital on October 18 with dengue-like symptoms, said MCD officials. The boy died on October 19 but the report confirming his cause of death came in today, added Dr Yadav.
Civic authorities maintain that there is no reason to panic as most patients do not develop DSS. Experts maintain that cases of dengue viral fever will continue to trickle in till late November due to delayed monsoon.
In Dengue Shock Syndrome, the shock occurs two to six days after the symptoms appear. The patient collapses and other symptoms include blood spots, bleeding gums and nosebleeds. The mortality rate ranges from 6 to 30 percent, most commonly in children.
