68-year-old man shot dead in Rani Bagh

Gupta operated as a moneylender in the area. Investigators suspect that this would have resulted in him having some enemies and that he was shot dead by one of them

A 68-year-old man,who owns an electrical workshop in Northwest Delhis Rani Bagh area,was shot dead by unidentified men on Monday evening. Police suspect a personal enmity led to his murder. Police said the man,identified as Jai Narayan Gupta,had also served as Jhajjar district Town planner earlier.

The incident was reported around 8 pm. Gupta was sitting outside his shop in Rani Baghs Sant Nagar when the assailants hot him dead. Gupta,police said,lived with his elder son and family on the first floor of the building and his shop is located on the ground floor.

According to police,about five minutes before the incident,Guptas younger sons brother-in-law had come for a visit. His elder son Manoj had gone upstairs to meet him.

Manoj reportedly told police that within five minutes of him going upstairs,he heard gunshots,which he mistook for fireworks.

Manojs wife,who had gone to the nearby market to buy milk,came back just then to find her father-in-law lying in a pool of blood.

She screamed and told Manoj that his father had been shot and was lying on the floor. The family rushed him to Maharaja Agrasen hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, a police officer said. Gupta,police said,was shot in his chest.

Police said Gupta operated as a moneylender in the area. Police suspect that this would resulted in him having some enemies and that one of them could have shot him dead.

There was no valuables missing from the shop or Guptas body. After scanning CCTV footage from a camera installed nearby,we found a man lurking around the shop around the time of the incident. We are currently trying to ascertain his identity, the officer said.
