4 yrs after Rs 80 lakh theft,man held

Four years after a jeweller,Amrish Kothari,filed a complaint that diamonds and jewellery worth Rs 80 lakhs were stolen from him,the Southeast Delhi police said they have nabbed the thief.

The police said the accused,Nagaraj,was arrested from Madangir area on Monday by special staff of the Delhi Police.

According to the police,on December 21,2005,Kothari had come to the Capital from Mumbai on a Jet Airways flight and hired a taxi from the airport.

After driving for around 1 km the taxi driver noticed a puncture and stopped to change the tyre,the police said. Kothari,meanwhile,was talking on his mobile phone. Taking advantage of this,Nagaraj stole the bag containing the jewellery,kept on the rear seat of the taxi,the police said.

A senior police officer said,“Though some members of his gang had been arrested in the case,Nagaraj was absconding till now.”

Nagaraj,who comes from Tamil Nadu,has reportedly told the police that he had punctured the tyre of the taxi to rob Kothari. The police said the accused is also involved in other cases of theft and used to puncture the tyres of his victims’ vehicles to distract them.

The police recovered two stolen laptops from him.
