At least four people were charred to death and one person was critically injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh early on Tuesday after a car collided with a canter truck and caught fire, the police said, adding that they are yet to identify the deceased.
According to officials, the accident occurred when the canter truck travelling from Aligarh towards Eta district collided with the car which was coming from the opposite direction. A few witnesses said that it appeared as though the car’s tire burst, causing its driver to lose control of the vehicle, which ended up on the other side of the road, hitting the truck.
However, the police are yet to confirm what caused the accident. The car was found to be charred, while the front portion of the truck appeared to be smashed in. Cranes were used to clear the road.
Amrit Jain, Superintendent of Police, Aligarh Rural, said that at around 6.30 am, the police received information that two vehicles had collided before catching fire at Gopi Pull, which falls under the limits of the Akrababad police station. “We were initially told that a few people may have been injured in the collision,” he added.
“On receiving the information, the local police, the area circle officer, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), and the chief fire officers reached the spot along with the fire rescue team and ambulances. We also called in ambulances from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI),” the SP said.
He said they first extinguished the fire and then rescued the people trapped in the vehicles. One injured person was rushed to the JNMC Trauma Centre in Aligarh. “Four people have died in the accident. We have sent their bodies for post-mortem. We will identify them soon. Legal proceedings are underway. We have also cleared traffic in the area,” SP Jain stated.
