A 32-year-old male nurse was killed after being struck by an iron beam on the Janak Setu flyover near Janakpuri around 10 pm on Saturday night. The victim, identified as Jasram Meena, was a West Delhi resident.
The MCD had built the iron beam to prevent heavy vehicles from using the flyover. Initial investigations revealed that a speeding truck had hit the beam, while the victim and his wife were heading down on a motorcycle on the opposite lane of the flyover.
The beam broke off and struck the victim, who succumbed to injuries. His wife escaped with minor injuries.
The bridge had been closed for renovation since June 2011 and had been opened for public use only on Saturday. Eyewitnesses told police that the beam had no indicator on it,which made it difficult to spot it from a distance. The truck driver Bhim Yadav, whom we arrested later, revealed that he failed to see the beam. There were no police personnel manning the bridge at the time of the incident. The iron beam was struck hard by the upper part of the truck after which it fell on the victim on the other lane, said a police officer.
Police said a case had been registered against the driver, who is from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Police also said they were probing whether the MCD was at fault.
