A 32-year-old man who allegedly stole “fine quality” taps from lower court premises and the houses of lower court judges, was arrested by the South Delhi police on Saturday.

Hemant alias Deepu exclusively targeted the lower courts and used to make money by selling the expensive taps, police said. He has reportedly confessed to the crime.

According to police, his involvement in cases of thefts at the Saket courts has been ascertained. Police are also investigating if Hemant was involved in similar cases at other court complexes as well.

“So far only two cases have been reported from the Saket Court complex. We are yet to establish his involvement in thefts in other areas,” said a senior police officer.

On March 16,Hemant had allegedly stolen ten taps from the house of an Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, following which a case of burglary was registered.

Police had come under criticism given the thefts occurred despite the tight security around the courts.

On Saturday, two constables were stationed at the complex, dressed in plainclothes. “They were patrolling the area when they spotted Hemant carrying a bag. They chased the accused,” said the officer.

In a dramatic chase, the accused reportedly climbed to the third floor of one of the buildings at the complex and tried jumping off it when one of the constables caught him. “Hemant was arrested. He confessed to the crimes following an interrogation,” said the officer.

Hemant told police that he was involved in around eight such incident; a claim that police are now investigating.

Hemant is resident of Khanpur,South Delhi.

In September last year, one Rahul Kumar was arrested for stealing around 70 taps, exclusively from Saket courts, over a three-month period.
