They entered on the pretext of enquiring about the room, police said.
Four persons, including three siblings, have been arrested for allegedly robbing an 86-year-old woman of gold jewellery in Dwarka’s Bindapur. Police said they had spotted the woman wearing heavy gold ornaments and planned the robbery after a board was hung outside the house stating that a room was available on rent. The accused entered the house on the pretext of enquiring about the room.
A PCR call was received on November 14. Officers were informed that two women and two men had forcibly entered the house of the caller’s mother and robbed her of a pair of gold bangles, a pair of gold earrings and a gold ring. Police said the group fled the spot immediately after the robbery.
A case under Sections 309(6) (robbery) and 3(5) (common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Bindapur police station, and an investigation was launched.
Police said that during the probe, they scanned footage of more than 150 CCTV cameras installed at the spot and surrounding areas.
Based on technical surveillance and local intelligence, the accused were traced to a house in Uttam Nagar’s Nanda Ram Park. Following a search, officers recovered all the robbed jewellery from their possession, and arrested all four.
Police said that the accused revealed during questioning that around 10 days prior to the robbery, they had spotted the victim sitting outside her house wearing gold jewellery. They subsequently noticed a board indicating that a room was available for rent and decided to use it as a pretext to gain access to the house. “Around four-five days prior to the incident, the women went to the house and inquired about the room. They learnt that the elderly woman stays alone at the house during the day. They waited for an opportunity, and finally executed their plan on November 14. During questioning, it was revealed that three of the accused — Anjali (24), Ranju (20) and Ratan Mehto (19) — are siblings. The fourth accused, Raju Kumar (27) is their friend,” said DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh.
