Tihar officials said a search operation was conducted on Wednesday around 5-6 pm and a mobile phone and an improvised blade were recovered from jail numbers 8 and 9. (File) At least 20 inmates suffered injuries on their hands and back after allegedly clashing with jail officials inside Delhi’s Tihar Jail Wednesday. Officials, however, said all the injuries are self-inflicted.
Tihar officials said a search operation was conducted on Wednesday around 5-6 pm and a mobile phone and an improvised blade were recovered from jail numbers 8 and 9.
“We noticed an unusual movement of inmates from the barracks where the recovery was made. Further raids were conducted and a SIM card and a mobile charger were also recovered. While an inmate was being questioned about the mobile phone, he was taken to his barrack to recover the items but he instigated other inmates. They abused jail staff and over 20 of them inflicted injuries to themselves. This was done to resist raids inside cells and prevent staff from recovering phones,” said an officer.
Police said one of the inmates even managed to take out a mobile phone and called his family who then called PCR about the incident. However, the PCR caller alleged that the staff beat up the inmates, said police.
“The additional staff at the control room immediately rushed to the site and controlled the situation. The injured inmates were treated for their self-inflicted injuries inside the jail dispensary and four among them were referred to DDU hospital due to deep cuts,” added the officer.
CCTVs were analysed and jail officials said they recovered the phone which was used to make the call to the family.
Delhi Prisons Department spokesperson said, “We have recovered CCTV footage of the incident. The inmates intentionally beat up the staff and inflicted injuries on themselves to avoid raids. A complaint of the incident has already been made to Hari Nagar police station and further action as per the Delhi Prison Rules is being taken against the defaulting inmates.”
