More than a week after a 17-year-old boy was beaten up by his classmates over petty issues, he succumbed to the injuries at RML Hospital in Delhi, the police said on Sunday, adding that a case has been registered and the matter is being investigated.

The deceased studied at Jan Kalyan school in Northeast Delhi and was returning home on December 15 when a group of three to four boys accosted him, according to the police. The group attacked him and he sustained injuries on his face and head.

“Nobody called the police and no MLC (medico-legal certificate) was made. The boy returned home after first-aid. The elders had intervened and the matter was settled,” said an officer.

However, the boy’s health started deteriorating on Friday night and he collapsed on Saturday morning. Doctors called the police later to inform them about the assault on the boy.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Joy Tirkey said, “He was taken to GTB Hospital from where the doctors referred him to RML Hospital. A case of assault was immediately registered on the complaint by the victim’s father. The doctors informed us that the boy had been assaulted and had severe injuries.”

The boy died during the treatment on Saturday. The sequence of events and the exact cause of death are being ascertained, officers added.

The boy’s father, Jitender, 54, said his son first got into a verbal spat with another boy on December 12. Later, a group of boys ganged up against his son and assaulted him, he alleged.
