A class IV employee working with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) claimed that he was robbed of Rs 40,000 in Mehrauli area,South Delhi, last week, police said. However, when police nabbed the robbers, more than Rs 17 lakh was recovered from their possession.
The incident occurred on April 30,when the employee Ramesh Kumar was on his way home. He was allegedly intercepted by two motorcycle-borne men at a traffic intersection point near Chattarpur in South Delhi.
The accused,Khursheed (28) and Kapil (25),robbed him of the cash and hid it in a forested area near Andheria Mor. We arrested the two accused persons on a specific tip-off. They had hidden the money in a vacant plot of land near Andheria Mor, said Chhaya Sharma,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
When police questioned Kumar about the large amount of money recovered from the accused,he admitted that the money was collected from people indulging in unauthorised construction activities at many places near Mehrauli.
He told us that it was bribe money paid to him by people who wanted to indulge in unauthorised construction activities. In the written complaint
Kumar had submitted to us in the beginning,he had said that Rs 40,000 robbed from him belonged to a friend, who was a property dealer, a senior police officer said.
Police said they will contact Kumars immediate superiors to find out more about the bribe money trail.
Even the robbers were surprised to know that the snatched bag contained such a huge amount of money. We would not have been able to know about the bribes if we had not recovered the remaining money from them, the officer said.
While Khursheed is a driver,Kapil runs a motorcycle repair shop. They had decided to rob passersby on the 100-Foot-Road in Chattarpur, which is lined by offices of property dealers,to make some easy money.
