An unidentified man committed suicide by jumping into the sea near the Worli stretch of the Bandra Worli sea link on Monday. A private security guard posted at the sea link,who jumped in to save the man had to be rescued by the police. This is the second suicide that has taken place on the same stretch in less than a week. Lalit Sheth,owner of Raj Travels World,had jumped off the sea link recently.
The deceased,believed to be in his late 20s,had come to the sea link around 3 pm,the Worli police said.
Witnesses said he managed to give private security guards the slip. One of the guards,Kamal Ali (25),saw him walk inside and asked him to stop. The man,however,jumped into the sea. Ali also jumped in to save him, said an officer of the Worli Police.
The officer said Ali could not manage to save the man and began drowning himself. One of his colleagues informed us of the incident. We rushed to the spot and managed to save Ali, said the officer. Ali was taken to Poddar Hospital. Doctors said they will have to keep him under observation for a day. He is stable, said the officer.
The body was taken by the police to Sion Hospital for post-mortem examination. Our main priority is to ascertain his identity. We have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and a probe is on, said the officer.
