An autorickshaw driver entered the house of a woman, dragged her out by the hair and assaulted her for not yielding to his demand of Rs 50 more than the meter reading, according to her complaint with police.
The woman says the driver also assaulted her 80-year-old mother who rushed to her aid. Sohaila Merchant told The Indian Express she hired the autorickshaw from Jehangir Hospital to her house at A/8 Maurya Apartments off Mangaldas Road,on July 9. I gave Rs 30 to the driver,Rs 5 more than the tariff. I carry a tariff card with me. The meter showed 2.8 km,which comes to about Rs 25. The driver demanded Rs 50 more saying he was finding it tough to feed his family due to inflation, she said.
I refused and walked off. The driver followed and knocked at the door. I did not open. But when I heard the sound of pots being smashed,I opened the door. Suddenly,he caught hold of my hair and dragged me outside. He thrashed my watchmen and assaulted my mother who rushed to my help. During the scuffle, his badge fell to the ground, she said.
She called police control room and eight constables, including two women, reached the house and took her complaint. Police registered a non-cognizable offence.
Merchant says she is scared. Three days have passed and police have not arrested him yet. We are scared because before leaving,he had yelled Maine Ghar Dekh Liya Hai (I have seen your house). We also approached the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for details. The officer at RTO assured he will give the details on Tuesday, she said. Police said they could not get details of the driver as the RTO was closed on Saturday and Sunday. Head constable A R Bansode, said,We have extended full co-operation to Merchant. It is only because the RTO was closed on Saturday and Sunday that we could not get details of the driver.
