According to GCC, around two lakh fans are expected to turn up for the matches in the city and they hope the awareness will sensitize them on depositing waste in the bins and promote waste segregation to maintain a litter-free environment.

With Chennai being one of the venues in India that is hosting the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), in coordination with private conservancy operator Urbaser Sumeet, is planning to segregate the waste collected on match days.
Chennai Mayor R Priya, in the presence of GCC commissioner J Radhakrishnan, launched the awareness campaign ‘Garbage in bin, Let’s make Chennai Win’ under the Singara Chennai 2.0 scheme on Saturday, ahead of the match between India and Australia on Sunday. The Mayor also unveiled the ‘Mr Bin’ mascot to spread awareness on waste management.

Taking to X, Urbaser Sumeet noted that it seeks to promote reduction of waste during the matches and create awareness.
Speaking to indianexpress.com, N Mahesan, chief engineer, solid waste management of GCC, said that 18 tons of waste was collected from the stadium on Monday, a day after the game. He added tht it could increase to 22 tons approximately.
“Nearly 70 per cent of the garbage is segregated, the rest was collected today (Monday). The bio-degradable waste is sent to the micro composing centres (MCC) and the other non-biodegradable waste is sent to the material recovery facilities (MRF). Around 79 people are deployed for picking litter outside the stadium, and 15 information, education, and communication (IEC) staff, with the support of public address systems, are used as well. Tippers, battery-operated vehicles (BOV), and compactors are involved in this process,” the official said.
Meanwhile, GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan inspected the work carried out in roads that were newly laid at Somasundaram Nagar, Thiruvalluvar Salai, Rangasayee street, Jawahar Nagar in Kolathur in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zone. It was noted that the storm water drain (SWD) works carried at Rs 17.39 crore, has been completed here.
