The bodies of Vidhya, 21, and Gayathri, 23, were found floating in a well in Valanadu village.
The sisters worked at a textile mill near Coimbatore city, where they met and fell in love with the two brothers, their fellow employees.
“Both sisters had come home Sunday to attend a temple festival in their village. Their parents, Pichai, a daily-wage labourer, and mother, Akilandeshwari, noticed their daughters engaged in long phone calls. The sisters admitted to their relationships, which their parents strongly opposed due to the men being of a different faith,” said an officer attached to the Thuvarankurichi police station.
On Tuesday morning, following the confrontation, both sisters left home and did not return. Police said local cattle herders found two mobile phones by a well near the home and found one body floating in the water. “Local police and fire rescue services were immediately informed, and we retrieved the bodies of the sisters from the well,” the officer said.
The officer said the sisters had sent a voice message to the mother of the men they were in a relationship with, telling her that they wished to end their lives. One of the sisters had written her own name on her hand, while the other had written down their younger brother’s phone number.
Police said that according to their preliminary investigation, the sisters may have died by suicide owing to the distress caused by their parents’ opposition to their relationships. They said they are examining the mobile phones.
Police have sent the bodies to a hospital for autopsy and registered a case under Section 174 (suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
