Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin Thursday informed the state legislative assembly that a life-size statue of former prime minister V P Singh will be installed in Chennai to honour his contribution to social justice.
Stalin, while making the announcement, heaped praises on the former PM and said it was Singh who constituted the Cauvery Water Tribunal and accepted the request of then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Kalaignar M Karunanidhi to name the international terminal in Chennai after DMK founder and former chief minister C N Annadurai and the domestic terminal after former chief minister K Kamaraj of the Congress party.
Hailing Singh as the doyen of social justice, Stalin said despite being in power for a short term, the former PM was instrumental in bringing various reforms and it was he who had implemented the 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in Union government jobs based on the recommendation of the Second Backward Classes Commission headed by B P Mandal.
Stalin claimed that Singh considered Tamil Nadu as his own and accepted rationalist and social reformer Periyar as his leader. Stail further added that Singh respected Kalaignar as his brother and they both shared a great camaraderie. “The former prime minister stood for the welfare of Tamils in various instances,” the Chief Minister said.
Meanwhile, DMK IT Wing secretary and Mannargudi MLA TRB Rajaa took to Twitter and shared a video of the former prime minister’s granddaughters expressing their happiness over the announcement.
