Orange Alert in Chennai on December 2 and 3 as MeT department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall
Since Tuesday night, heavy rain has continued to lash Chennai and its suburbs leading to waterlogging in several places.
The weather department said that for the next 24 hours, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy and intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in some areas. (File) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for Chennai and its neighbouring districts on December 2 and 3. It added that the delta and coastal districts are also likely to receive heavy rainfall in the upcoming days.
“Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and neighbourhood in the lower tropospheric levels and the above Low Pressure System, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal with isolated heavy rain over the coastal and adjoining districts during November 29 to December 3, 2023,” a bulletin read.
Since Tuesday night, heavy rain has continued to lash Chennai and its suburbs leading to waterlogging in several places. In areas like Chromepet on GST Road, the vehicles Wednesday morning moved at a snail’s pace due to stagnant water. In a few places in the city, ankle-deep water was stagnant, making it difficult for commuters to reach their destinations.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) posted an update on X noting that the officials are on ground, working to manage the sudden downpour.

For the next two days, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu as well as in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi.
On December 1, heavy rain is likely to occur over Isolated places over Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts.

For December 2 and December 3, an orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts as heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast.
The fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on the above dates.
