Security was tightened in the border areas of Tamil Nadu on Friday following a state-wide bandh called by pro-Kannada activists in Karnataka over the Cauvery water-sharing issue.

A statement issued by the office of the Tamil Nadu director general of police (DGP) on Thursday said that officials of districts that share a border with Karnataka, including Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Salem and Nilgiris, have been issued a precautionary warning to stay alert.

“As far as the transportation of public busses and trucks are concerned, based on the discussions held with the Karnataka government officials, necessary directions have been provided. At all checkposts, under senior officials, security has been tightened with the deployment of extra police personnel,” the statement added.

For any clarifications regarding transportation between the two states and for other inquiries, people have been asked to contact the Krishnagiri district divisional office at 9498170430 or 9498215407.

According to a senior official in Krishnagiri, over 400 trucks from Tamil Nadu that were headed to Karnataka have halted in areas like Shoolagiri, Krishnagiri Taluk, Oppadhavadi (Bargur) and Sappanipatti. Private vehicles bearing Tamil Nadu registration numbers are also being re-directed at the border. Only vehicles with people travelling on emergency purposes are being allowed to cross the border after the requisite details of the vehicle owners have been noted down and the Karnataka counterparts have been informed about the arrival of such vehicles.

The statewide bandh against the Karnataka government’s decision to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu saw protests on Friday in various districts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya and Chikmagalur, among others.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said earlier this week that the government would move the Supreme Court over the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC)’s directive to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu from September 28 to October 15.
