The Tamil Nadu Police on Sunday arrested a DMK panchayat president and three others for allegedly assaulting a government official when he attempted to stop illegal red sand mining near Thuraiyur in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district. The party suspended V Maheshwaran, 48, from all posts and revoked his primary membership.
According to the police, after receiving various complaints of illegal red sand mining at Narasingapuram panchayat that falls under the Thuraiyur block, Revenue Inspector Prabhakaran headed to the spot on Saturday night and found an excavator transporting the soil.
As the officer stopped the process, Maheshwaran, the panchayat president of Narasingapuram; P Dhanapal, who works with the state transport corporation; R Manikandan, and K Kandasamy abused him and assaulted him with stones.
Prabhakaran was rescued by the village administrative officer and taken to a local primary healthcare centre for first-aid and later to the government hospital in Thuraiyur. District Collector M Pradeep Kumar visited the victim and offered support.
Based on the complaint filed by Prabhakaran, the Thuraiyur police Sunday registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 294 B (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words in or near any public place), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty), 506 (1)(punishment for criminal intimidation), 379 (punishment for theft), and under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
DMK general secretary Durai Murugan issued a statement noting that Maheshwaran had violated party discipline and brought disrepute to the party through his actions.
