Actor and founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Captain Vijayakanth was admitted to a private hospital for a routine check-up on Saturday and is likely to return home in a day or two, said his party on Monday.

According to hospital sources, Vijayakanth, 71, who once served as the Leader of Opposition (LoP), was suffering from cough and throat pain.

The DMDK also dismissed a few television reports which had claimed that Vijayakanth was on ventilator support. “This is absolutely false news. We request you not to believe in any rumours,” the party said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the condition of the DMDK leader is stable.

“For the last two days, he had issues related to coughing and was admitted to a private hospital. I spoke with the hospital management an hour back. They informed me that though he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), his health condition was stable. Since he had undergone kidney transplantation, the same doctor who treated him earlier, is taking care of him at the hospital,” he said during a press meeting.

Vijayakanth, who is known for his fiery speeches, faced a setback to his health a few years ago, leading to a reduction in his public appearances.

His party contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls for the first time in 2006 winning one seat, and turned the tables in the following election and got 29 seats in alliance with the AIADMK.

However, the DMDK which gained the Opposition status through that victory, fell flat in the following polls as it was not able to win any seats and also started to lose out on its vote bank.
