As many as 1,700 people, including women and children, have registered for the 9 km-trek inside the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary (Nepli-Kansal forests) slated to be organised on the first day of the Wildlife Week-2023 which starts on October 2.
The Wildlife Week-2023 will be held between October 2 and October 8.
As the number has crossed the limit of 1,500, the UT Forest and Wildlife Department, Chandigarh, has stopped accepting new registrations.
“The registration for the nature walk was done online. We extended the limit to 1,700 considering the enthusiasm among the general public. But we cannot afford to go beyond that,” said T C Nautiyal, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), UT.
The trek will start from the Nepli Entry Gate. It has been divided into three segments. According to the instructions, registered people are scheduled to reach the entry gate at 6.30 am.
A forest officer said that those who have registered will be sent in batches of 50 people, each accompanied by forest guards, a warden and a range officer.
The trek inside the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary is always in great demand. However, it is not allowed from May to September.
Apart from the nature walk, the department will also organise various programmes, including a painting competition, bird-watch walks at Sukhna Lake, cycle rally, slogan writing for school students on themes related to the environment and others, during the week.
