Thief runs away with wheelchair-bound man’s phone, eyewitnesses say ‘shame on humanity’

Ganesh, a 24-year-old wheelchair-bound man, had given his mobile phone to an unknown man who wanted to make a call, unaware of what could happen next. The man, wearing blue jeans and a shirt, wasted no time and swiftly ran away, leaving Ganesh in shock. The incident took place on Friday around 11 am at the parking area of the Sector 11 Showroom Market in Panchkula.

Despite attempting to chase the man by propelling his wheelchair with his hands, Ganesh failed.

The man managed to escape, prompting Ganesh to shout for assistance, leading many to gather and support him.

An eyewitness reported that the unknown man even attempted to take a small cash box from Ganesh’s wheelchair but dropped it upon finding it empty. Ganesh, a resident of Baltana, earns his livelihood by selling slippers from his wheelchair.

Speaking to The Indian Express, A K Sharma, a retired bank official from Sector 10, said, “This incident shames humanity. I’ve known Ganesh for a long time. He is a sincere man who keeps to himself and earns his livelihood through hard work. It’s unthinkable that someone would take his valuables in this manner. One of us called 112. Two police teams visited Ganesh and recorded his statement.”

In-charge of the Panchkula Sector 10 police post Sub-Inspector Mandeep Singh said, “We lodged an FIR against an unknown person under Section 406 of the IPC. Ganesh says he will be able to identify the suspect once brought before him. The CCTV footage from the showroom market is being scrutinised.”

A case has been registered at the Sector 5 police station.
