Artist Sumant Vadhera’s world is all about dreams this season. And well, sketching them on canvas seems to be his favourite idea for the upcoming art shows. “Dreams fuel your imagination to look for solutions. They enable you to create simple drawings that can have concrete representational meaning,” says Vadhera,as he picks up a plain canvas and sketches what he dreamt last night — a picturesque landscape — one which takes final shape only after Vadhera is happy with the rough draft. Vadhera explained the process — to dream, draw and doodle — to more than 40 students at “Colour your Imagination”,an event organised by RentMeToys on Sunday. The artist, who was conferred with the President of India award for best illustrations for a children’s books in 1997,claims to understand child psychology well and believes that to bring out the artist in children, one has to let their imaginations run wild. “You can’t bind them by themes,” says Vadhera while demonstrating the ease of using new age colour pencils. “You can create the water colour effect without really touching the paints,” he points out, reminiscing the time when he had to spend endless hours trying to master the art of mixing colours. “But now it is easy. Thanks to the computers, children have stopped writing, leave alone write beautifully and that is something which needs to be concentrated on,” says Vadhera, who also included a lesson in calligraphy in his workshop.
