SERVICES REMAINED crippled at the offices of the Registering and Licensing Authority (RLA) due to breakdown of the server for the second day on Tuesday.
The server, located and managed from Hyderabad, broke down on Monday afternoon and the technical staff failed to fix it. The breakdown forced the visitors at all three offices — Sector 17, Industrial Area and Sector 43 — to wait for hours in queues to get driving licences. However, the service of vehicle registration remained unaffected as the software runs on a separate server.
Kirpal Singh, a student of Panjab University, claimed that he had to wait at RLA in Sector 17 for five hours, but in vain. He alleged that the staff did not inform the visitors whether to wait or leave. “The staff was making an announcement stating that the server broke down and those who want to wait can stay. They did not clearly tell us when the services will resume,” he said.
The general public has been facing inconvenience due to frequent breakdowns of the server.
Karnail Singh, incharge of RLA, said that they had informed the technical staff in Hyderabad, but they had failed to resolve the issue. Unhappy with the frequent breakdowns of the server, Karnail said that he would take up the issue in a meeting of transport scheduled to be held in Delhi on September 1. “I will take up the issue to ensure that city residents face no inconvenience,” he said.
Recently, UT Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi had directed the authorities to upgrade its queue management and online appointment system. The software used for issuing tokens has developed a technical snag as a result of which the system is taking time in generating tokens, leading to chaos at the RLA. The authorities had started the system of tokens to check long queues.
To spare the residents the ordeal of running from pillar to post to avail services at RLA, an online appointment system was launched, which is also not functioning properly due to glitches in the software. The system enabled the residents to take online appointments through the website chdtransport.gov.in. Two express counters were set up for residents who take online appointment.
