Two days after the president of Ambedkar Welfare Council,Shanti Dass, was arrested by the Vigilance Bureau (VB) for graft,Deputy Superintendent of Police (East) P K Dhawan and Inspector Jagir Singh joined investigations on Saturday and got their statements recorded with the VB.

Shanti had allegedly promised suspended head constable Mahinder Singh his reinstatement to the post by influencing the IGP in return of Rs 1 lakh. It was when Mahinder asked Shanti to come outside the office of DSP P K Dhawan to receive a Rs 10,000 instalment of the demanded bribe that the VB caught him (Shanti) red-handed. In his statement, the DSP claimed that before being arrested,Shanti had come to his office to discuss some other matter, said sources with the VB.

“The DSP denied having any acquaintance with the accused,” added sources.

In his statement to the VB,Inspector Jagir Singh, who was alleged to have had a meeting with both Shanti and Mahinder, said: “They did visit me but never spoke about any reinstatement. They discussed their personal matter with me. Acknowledging his old association with Shanti, the Inspector affirmed that he had never indulged in any unlawful activity, said sources with the VB.
