Offices involved in this initiative have been instructed not to schedule any internal meetings during the public hearing window. In exceptional circumstances, administrative meetings may be conducted either before or after the scheduled hearing hour.(X/Gulab Kataria)Acting on the directions of UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the Chandigarh Administration has instituted a new system of regular public hearings by the city’s top officials, including the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, the Deputy Commissioner (DC), and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), three times a week to bolster public participation and timely grievance redressal.
This initiative aims to strengthen transparent and citizen-centric governance by ensuring that key administrative officers remain accessible to the public at fixed intervals.
The hearings will be conducted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 am to 12 noon, offering residents a direct platform to raise issues, seek redressal, and submit representations.
Since March 2024, the administration has reserved Wednesdays exclusively for public interaction across departments. However, in the light of growing public expectations and in pursuit of better service delivery, the Administrator recently visited various government offices to evaluate the efficacy of existing citizen engagement mechanisms.
Based on his observations, the decision was taken to enhance the frequency and structure of these hearings.
To address issues requiring coordinated action, the Deputy Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police will also hold joint public hearings every Friday at the DC Office in Sector 17, Chandigarh.
Offices involved in this initiative have been instructed not to schedule any internal meetings during the public hearing window. In exceptional circumstances, administrative meetings may be conducted either before or after the scheduled hearing hour.
Reaffirming its commitment to participatory governance, the Chandigarh Administration has stated that these dedicated sessions are intended to ensure residents’ concerns are addressed promptly, effectively, and in a citizen-friendly manner.
