Chandigarh Police is all set to add more horses to its mounted squad and in next few months the city police will be having over 40 horses for patrolling in the sensitive areas.
We are procuring more horses for the mounted squad and in a month or so we will be having a good number of horses, said Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh. The horses are of great help in patrolling and especially while handling any violent protests in the city.
The proposal for purchasing of over two dozen horses was approved few months back and the senior Police officials from the UT have already visited various farm houses in Punjab and had also seen various breeds of the horses in different price ranges.
And once the new horses are procured, they would be trained by instructors and would be gradually introduced to noise and crowds so that they are conditioned for getting inducted in the mounted squad of the Chandigarh police for patrolling purposes. At present the UT police has 16 horses that are deployed in various police stations of the city for patrolling of sensitive areas. The horses were also useful during the violent protests after the kidnapping and murder of five year old boy Khushpreet.
The police used horses for chasing the mob and it was easy for the police to control the stone pelting mob. It was in fact after the Khuspreet episode that police decided to expedite the process of adding more horse to the mounted squad.
