The UT Administration has only 39 counsellors for its 106 government schools. Each counsellor looks after two schools and there is no specific lecture or period they are required to take. These counsellors can also be seen taking lectures of teachers who are absent, rather than holding a specific class to counsel students.

On Thursday,a Class XII boy from the Sector 45 Government School hit his classmate with a sharp edged weapon in front of the teacher leaving him profusely bleeding. This was not the isolated incident. There have been a couple others where students have indulged in activities like hitting each other. Experts feel it is high time these students got proper counselling and are taken care of.

However, looking at the situation in the Education department, this appears to be a distant dream for them.

According to the data available with the UT Education department, any student can consult the counsellors to discuss their problems. The schools are also required to send in a monthly report to the Education department explaining the kind of work these counsellors do.

Meanwhile, officials from the Education department recently pulled up the schools after receiving complaints that school principals used to ask the counsellors to conduct subject classes.

A senior official from the department said,“We had hired more than 50 counsellors but now we have just 39 left. Most left either because they got married or got a chance to work abroad. The hiring needs to be strengthened and incidents of individuals using this platform for marriage or a career abroad should be checked.”

The Central Board of Education (CBSE) had made it mandatory for schools to hire a permanent counsellor. However, these 39 counsellors are on contract basis.

District Education Officer Chanchal Singh said,“We will hire more counsellors and ensure that all students receive counselling. Principals of all the schools have been directed to hold regular counselling sessions. Also,we will start inspecting the schools and take feedback from students about counselling.”
