Impound 150 vehicles,issue challans to 500 traffic
violators,arrest eight,attend to many quarrels and fights
The Chandigarh Police cracked the whip on traffic violators,hooligans and nuisance-makers in the city during Holi on Sunday. In the day-long drive,the city police impounded more than 150 vehicles,challaned over 500 traffic violators,arrested eight persons for breaching public peace and creating nuisance,and attended to numerous quarrels and fights in the city.
The day began at 8 am when the police control room started receiving calls about quarrels,accidents,misbehaviors etc. Hooligans,in the garb of the festival of colours,were reported to be troubling people walking on the roads,pelting eggs or water-balloons against peoples wishes and indulging in all kinds of violations like overspeeding,blaring sirens,hooters on open jeeps,overloading,etc.
Motorists were also booked for drunken driving during the day time. Around 126 nakas were set up by the police in various parts of the city. The traffic police and police control room (PCR) vehicles were put on high alert to identify and book the traffic violators.
Around 30 accidents were reported from various parts of the city but none were fatal. The maximum calls about brawls,quarrels etc were received by the police control room from the southern sectors of the city.
Since these sectors are thickly populated,incidents of minor brawls,quarrels,altercations were reported more from the southern parts of the city. However,nothing major was reported from any part of the city except for an unfortunate incident in which a person lost his life in a brawl in Manimajra, said a senior police official.
