UT Adviser Sharma inaugurates Tourist Information Centre at Capitol Complex

The centre will provide information to tourists and act as a single window to issue permits to domestic and foreign tourists. The Centre will be open seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors will also be able to hire tourist guides trained by the tourism department to take a tour of the Capitol complex, buy souvenirs of Chandigarh, watch films on the other tourist attractions in the city and also avail locker facility. Chandigarh tourist police will also extend assistance to the tourists.

Sharma said, “The Tourist Information Centre is a tribute to the philosophy of Le Corbusier and a salute to our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for gifting us the city and the Capitol Complex that ushered in a technological modern movement in India.”

He added that there had been a long standing need for a centre like this to facilitate tourists. The information centre has been located prominently and strategically, and tourists can access the Capitol Complex, Rock garden and the Sukhna Lake from here.

Anil Kumar, secretary, Tourism said that the centre epitomises a cubic geometry-based on the principles of modern movement and carries forward the legacy of Le Corbusier. Exposed concrete is moulded to a sculptural form in this design composition and the four façades are a demonstration of pattern making in form.

The information Centre building has been designed by M N Sharma, former chief architect, UT Administration. The interior of the building demonstrates optimum space utilisation for designated functions with spatial overlaps and fluidity. Five Points of architecture envisaged by Le Corbusier.

The Adviser also flagged off an environment friendly battery operated tourist carts which will be an additional tourist facility for the tourists cart will ply along Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden.

In the evening, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul visited the Information Centre. He launched new brochures on the edifices of the Capitol Complex. A presentation about the status of Chandigarh’s nomination of Capitol Complex for the ‘World Heritage Site’ status to be submitted to UNESCO shortly was made. A short film focusing upon the Capitol Complex and the importance of the newly opened Tourist Information Centre was also showcased.
