Two teens drown in Mohali canal

Two teenagers drowned in the Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal at Sotal village in Mohali on Tuesday afternoon.

Two teenagers drowned in the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal at Sotal village in Mohali on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place around 1 pm when Gurdeep Singh alias Prince (15) and his friend Charanjit Singh (17) — both residents of Batta village, less than a km from Sotal village — were bathing in 10-15 feet deep water in the canal, said Kharar SHO Sub-Inspector Harsimran Singh Bal.

The duo had come to a religious fair at the village and on their way, they noticed water in the otherwise dry bed of the canal. “They jumped into the water for a bath but within a few minutes, they drowned,” said Bal.

He added that preliminary investigation has revealed that though not expert swimmers, the victims were used to take a dip in the shallow village ponds. “Without having an idea of the depth of the water, they jumped into the canal,” said Bal. While along the canal bank, the water was only 4-5-feet deep,on the far side,it was up to 15 feet deep,in which the teenagers got trapped.

Around 1.30 pm,a passerby noticed the two drowning. He arranged for a public announcement from Sotal village gurdwara, following which, villagers rushed to the spot and pulled them out. However, they were declared dead on arrival at a private hospital in Kharar.

While Prince was a student of Class VIII,Charanjit studied in Class IX at a village government school. Inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC have been initiated.
