Two get life term in jail for 2014 murder of BJP leader Ashutosh Bhardwaj

The murder took place on May 25, 2014 when Bhardwaj was attacked with swords at his home in Saketri when he was sleeping.

A local court sentenced two persons to life imprisonment and acquitted four others in connection with the murder case of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashutosh Bhardwaj (25) who was killed at his house in May 2014. Ashutosh’s brother and father were injured in the clash.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Gulab Singh found Arun Kumar and Ajay guilty under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The court acquitted four persons including Arun’s parents Zorawar Singh and Saroj and Pardeep and Sanjay. Another accused R D Swami, a priest died during the trial. Arun’s younger brother who is a minor is also undergoing trial in a juvenile court.

There was tension between the families of Bhardwaj and the convicts as both were supporting different political parties. Bhardwaj and Arun were involved in a fight during the Lok Sabha elections. Following this, the accused scaled a wall of Bhardwaj’s house and attacked him. Bhardwaj’s family managed to overpower Ajay, while two others managed to flee.

Police arrested Arun, Ajay, Zorawar, Saroj and their relatives Pardeep and Sanjay along with R D Swami who was a priest in a temple in Saketri. Arun’s younger brother was also arrested.

Defense counsel Sameer Sethi said that Saroj, Pardeep, Zorawar and Sanjay were acquitted due to lack of evidence against them.
