A punjab Police cop was assaulted by a truck driver and two other men after he intercepted and stopped a truck that evaded checking at the Information Collection Centre (ICC) barrier of the Excise and Taxation Department at Lakhnaur village in Mohali.

Admitted in Civil Hospital for treatment, the injured cop told police that he was on duty at the ICC barrier in Lakhnaur when the truck jumped the checkgate around 5.30 pm.

“Instead of stopping, the truck driver sped away, following which I chased the vehicle and intercepted it,” said Kuldeep Singh, while adding that soon two persons alighted from a car, which was following the truck, and with the help of the truck driver, thrashed him badly. Leaving him grievously injured, the trio fled the spot in their respective vehicles.

Two car-borne unidentified persons helped the truck driver beat up Kuldeep and left the cop injured before fleeing the spot, said Investigating Officer (IO) Satwinder Singh.

The police have lodged a case under Sections 353,186,332,506 and 34 of the IPC against the three unknown assailants.

A manhunt has been launched to track down the offenders on the basis of their vehicle registration numbers, added the IO.
