THE FELLING of trees on National Highway 21 from Kharar to Kurali has started. Hundreds of trees have been cut in the last few days for four-laning of the road. The work on four-laning the road will start soon. The widening of the stretch from Kharar to Kurali, which has become a killer stretch, has been a long pending demand of the people.
According to officials of the Forest Department, the work for cutting the trees along the road was started few days ago and about 100 trees have already been cut in the last six days. The tender for this work was issued last month.
The road from Kharar to Kurali is considered as one to the most-accident prone areas in the district and is on the list of ‘black spots’ — the stretches which are notorious for fatal road accidents. In the last three years, around 50 people lost their lives in accidents on the stretch.
Hunger strike
THE RESIDENTS of Phase VI who are holding a hunger strike against the construction of the flyover held a protest march on Sunday evening. The residents had started the strike on January 14 and are demanding that the construction of the flyover should be started few metres away from the residential area.
Major accidents on the Kharar-Kurali stretch
On September 17, 2013, three persons were killed while 35 were injured in a road accident between a Punjab roadways bus and a truck.
A couple was killed in July 2012 when a car hit them. The accident also resulted in protests by the local residents.
A woman was killed while 24 others were injured when a Punjab roadways bus was hit by a truck on the road.
