It’s the perfect way to usher in the summer and the new season. With the fields all golden and the spirits high,Baisakhi bonhomie is hard to miss. If you were back in the village, celebrations would have been truly grand but the city often loses out when it comes to traditional fanfare. But making sure Baisakhi is a spirited affair are some special campaigns in the city. Leading the line-up is Meenabazaar which has decked up its store in Manimajra in hues of golden yellow complete with traditional trimmings. Step inside and you are greeted with a cheerful ‘Jee Aayan Nu’ by the staff that’s slipped on special ethnic apparel for the day. Chilled lassi in earthy ‘kulhars’ dressed up with gota arrive soon after. “Often city residents miss out on traditional festivals. We wanted to do something special for Baisakhi and hence this two-day rollout,” mentioned Manish Jain,co-owner,Meenabazaar as we heard Jagjit Singh crooning traditional melodies in the background. Up on the first floor, the Phulkari patterns and earthen pots guided us as we noticed children dressed in Punjabi suits and flaunting juttis. “The two-day show will also see special prizes for children dressed in the Baisakhi theme,” informed Jain. A tattoo artist will also dish out festive specials and there will be a Baisakhi painting competition. “If you are spotted wearing a parandi, you have a prize coming your way,” pitched in Manish’s wife Pooja, the co-organiser of the special theme.

Elsewhere, planning a ‘Big’ Baisakhi line-up is the local radio station Big 92.7 FM which has chalked out special plans for listeners in Chandigarh and Punjab. At the Big FM Chandigarh Station,RJs – Anubhav and Satya will visit the City Centre Shopping Mall and organise various fun contests like ‘Lassi Drinking’ ‘Turban Tying’ and a special ‘Treasure Hunt’. During the latter event, listeners will get to win prizes and discounts on certain brands at the shopping mall. Those participating in the ‘Turban Tying’ competition will get to win surprise gifts. The station will also offer some special Punjabi programming mix as part of the Baisakhi celebrations. Speaking about the festive offering,Siddharth Bhardwaj,Regional Director (North – I) – BIG 92.7 FM,remarked,“Baisakhi is a festival to celebrate a brand new season and we wanted to offer our listeners a plethora of programming and on-ground activities which are not only fun to hear but fun to participate in as well.”

Making sure the traditional relevance of Baisakhi isn’t forgotten,My 94.3 FM too will run special on-air content. “The programming has been worked according to the theme for the day,” informed the station’s regional programming head Ritu Ghai who wants everyone to step out wearing yellow, the colour code for Baisakhi’s golden harvest. “Our radio jockeys will be on the move and those wearing the colour for the day will be given a chance to win a gold coin among other prizes,” added Ghai. Make the most of it!
