In a decision that would bring some relief to the shopkeepers, the shops would be allowed to remain open this Sunday. The decision of the UT Administration not to allow shops to remain open on Sunday had led to resentment among the shopkeepers as well as shoppers. The administration would examine the issue before taking a final call on keeping the shops open on Sunday.

Delegations of traders met UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas with the demand that they should be allowed to keep their shops open on Sundays. The traders said keeping shops closed would cause loss for their business.

The decision to allow the shops to open on Sundays was taken in 2007 and has been continuing since then. But a few days ago it was decided that the shops would be closed.

Diwakar Sahoonja, president of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, said with malls remaining open on Sundays,it would cause loss to the traders.

“The people who work for six days a week only have Sunday for shopping. If the shops are closed, they would have to look for alternatives. The malls are open on Sundays,” he said.

The members of the Traders Association,Sector 17 had also met the home secretary and discussed their point of view on the issue. The traders said the decision to keep the shops open on Sundays would be beneficial for both the shopkeepers and customers.

“We would sympathetically examine the representations. Traders will not be harassed. For now,no challans would be issued for opening shops on Sundays,¿ the home secretary said.
