Monsoons may have largely given a raincheck to the region, but there’s no stopping commemoration of the rain music. Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy and Indian National Theatre are organising an evening of Indian classical music of the rainy season. The programme is scheduled for Saturday,July 25,at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,Sector 27 and will feature Professor Arvind Dutt Sharma from Chandigarh and celebrated vocalist Arati Ankalikar from Pune. The programme will begin at 6 pm. Professor Sharma, who teaches music at Panjab University is the protege of LK Pandit, the doyen of Gwalior Gharana of Indian classical music. A doctorate in music from University of Delhi,he is perturbed at the waning values of music. “The interest in music is there for sure, but dedication is on a decline. Many youngsters want to learn music, but they forget that it is a profound discipline. They want things too early, with minimum effort,” says Dr Sharma. Apart from PU,Sharma has taught music at various educational institutes. His elder son Aditya Sharma,is a young vocalist and a scholar of Sangeet Research Academy at Kolkatta, while younger son,Adamya is an upcoming guitarist.
