After working with buttons, designer Anuj Sharma has moved on to rubber bands now
First he knotted his clothes up. Then his next collection made the most of buttons. Now designer Anuj Sharma,a non-conformist to fashion rules,is working with rubber bands. As he admits himself,Sharma is out to kill conventional tailoring. Concepts like these will allow designers to take a back seat and let consumers step forward with their creativity, explained Sharma, who was in the city on an invitation by Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) to be a part of their annual All India Facilitators training program.
Interestingly,Sharmas exploring the concept further. I want to develop the fastest process of making a garment. I am working with rubber bands instead of strips of fabrics. The buttons and the grid will remain, says the designer, who is looking to finalise this concept for his next fashion week collection. He is also seeking to put together ‘units’ of fabrics that can be easily detached and placed elsewhere, all as effortlessly. Think of the building blocks Lego, and you will get the concept. Imagine picking one piece of fabric off the leg and placing it near the waist as a pocket, he says, drawing designs in the air.
The designer who was recently invited by the British Council to showcase his creations at the annual Alchemy Festival held in London, says,For me design is all about good intentions. Once thats in place, the means to put it together will follow. Though he is not into designing for Bollywood, keep an eye out for the Sonam Kapoor-starrer Aisha that will showcase two of his outfits from the Knot for You series. I haven’t designed for the film… I think they have used two outfits each from a gamut of designers. Its not a big deal, he quips.
