First ever liver transplant at PGI

Chandigarh: A team of doctors at PGI performed a liver transplant on a 44-year old. A deceased person’s family donated the liver to Vijay Khurana of Saharanpur ,UP. It is the first liver transplant performed at PGI. The deceased was a 16-year-old-girl from Jind who met with an accident on Friday. She was brought to PGI and declared brain dead. The surgery started at 9 pm on Friday night and ended at 6 am on Saturday. The surgery was performed with the help of a team of senior liver anaesthetists,hepatobilliary surgeon and perfusion specialists.

Turban row: Complaint moved in Court

CHANDIGARH: A complaint was moved in the Court of the Mohali Chief Judicial Magistrate against the accused in the turban row that took place on March 28,wherein the turban of a protesting pharmacist was removed by a police official. The incident saw huge resentment within the Sikh community and an FIR was lodged on April 6. One of the complainants Harshinder Singh,a human rights lawyer and activist,said that they wanted to strengthen the case of Jagjit Singh,whose turban was removed and demand stringent action against the policemen involved.

One killed in road accident

CHANDIGARH: A pedestrian struck by a vehicle in Chandigarh on Saturday morning died in the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,(PGIMER). The police said that Soni lal,who used to work as a cook at a residential house,was hit from behind by a Zen (PB-08-BH-0232) at the Sector 37/38 crossing at around 10 am. The critically injured Lal was taken in the vehicle that hit him to PGIMER where he succumbed to his injuries. The locals,who were eyewitnesses to the accident,said that the car had fled from the spot but the police later confirmed that the driver had taken Lal to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the car,Monika,wife of Jagdeep,resident of 40 Parvati Enclave,Kharar,Punjab,later surrendered before the police and was taken into custody. The police have registered a case against her under Sections 279 and 337 at police station-39,Chandigarh. She was later given bail by court.
