Woman alleges her vanity number sold cheap to minister’s wife

Mohali: A Mohali resident has sent a legal notice to District Transport Officer (DTO) Karan Singh, asking him to withdraw the issuance of a vanity number to Surjit Kaur, wife of Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka for an amount of Rs 10,000,failing which, she has stated that she will move court.

The complainant,Varinderjit Kaur, has alleged that the DTO issued the vanity number purchased by her (Kaur) in an auction last August to Maluka’s wife, without notifying her. Kaur claims to have purchased the vanity number (PB 65 R 0007) for Rs 2.2 lakh for her Mercedes. This number,Kaur alleges, has been re-issued to Maluka’s wife on August 8 for mere Rs 10,000.

According to the DTO,the issuance of the number to Kaur was cancelled as she had failed to pay the road tax for her vehicle,a claim which she has contested.

When contacted,Karan Singh said he had withdrawn the number in January due to the non-payment of the road tax by Kaur, and alleged that the tax has still not been paid. “There are dozens of other examples where people buy expensive vehicles but fail to pay the road tax. In such a case,we withdraw the number and allot it on a first-come first-serve basis,” he said.
