JAC speaks against 'harassment' of teachers

CHANDIGARH: In a meeting held on Saturday,the leaders of Joint Action Committee of Teachers (JAC),UT,expressed resentment against the education department for allegedly harassing the teachers. The committee appealed to the administration to avoid the path of confrontation with the teaching community,and to adopt methods to make the teachers mentally at peace. The committee has decided to release a pamphlet describing the various other problems of the teachers pending since long. The committee also decided to call an extended meeting of the teachers on Thursday August 8. The co-convener,Swarn Singh Kamboj said,“In case,the administration does not listen to the genuine grievances of the teachers,the teaching community shall be compelled to start an agitation in a phased manner.”

Mahila Congress organises meet

Chandigarh: Chandigarh Territorial Mahila Congress organised a public meeting at Mauli Jagran on Saturday. Addressing the gathering,Anita Babbar,general secretary of All India Mahila Congress,said that the Congress-lead UPA government is seriously concerned for the poor and down trodden and for the safety and security of women. By launching food security ordinance nobody will sleep hungry in India in future.

Cleanliness drive at PU boys’ hostel

CHANDIGARH: In order to create awareness among the hostel residents,particularly the new comers,for maintaining cleanliness in the campus,a cleanliness drive was organised in the boys hostel no.1 of Panjab University (PU) on Saturday. The drive was initiated by Dean Student Welfare (DSW),Professor Navdeep Goyal. Besides the Chief of university security,Professor Anil Monga,and wardens of all the boys hostels,a number of students also participated in the drive. Professor Monga and wardens of all the boys hostels motivated the students to take part in the drive. The volunteer resident students also took the pledge for making efforts and spread awareness to keep the campus plastic free. The DSW and all the wardens also announced their decision to continue this kind of drive in the campus.

Deadline extended for MEd applications

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU) has extended the last date for online submission of application of MEd (Correspondence) till August 5 at University School of Open Learning (USOL) for the session 2013-2015. The last date for submission of the hard copy of the form and others requisite documents has also been extended till August 8. It is to be noted that admission to 150 seats in MEd (Correspondence) is available only for in-service teachers.

Four cases of auto-theft registered

Chandigarh: Four separate cases of auto theft were registered by the police Saturday. Two motorcycles was stolen from Elante Mall,Phase-1,Industrial Area,one from outside the mall and one from its parking,on Friday. Two cases of theft have been registered at the Industrial Area police station. A resident of Sector 71,Mohali,reported theft of his scooter from Sector 35,Chandigarh. A case of theft has been registered at Sector 36 police station. In the fourth incident,a resident of Phase-9,Industrial Area,Mohali reported the theft of his three-wheeler from near district court,Sector 43 on July 31. A case of theft has been registered at Sector 36 police station.

Man held with stolen motorcycle

Chandigarh: The police on Friday arrested a resident of Phase 10,Mohali for alleged possession of a stolen motorcycle. According to the police,the accused Rajinder Singh,was caught at a barricade set up in Sector 46 after a resident of Faidan village reported theft of his motorcycle from near Community Centre in Sector 46 on Thursday night. A case has been registered against the accused for theft and dishonestly receiving stolen property at the Sector 34

police station.

Youth booked for kidnapping minor

Chandigarh: A case has been registered against a 20-year-old youth at the Sector 11 police station for allegedly kidnapping a minor. The complaint was lodged by the parents of the missing 14-year-old girl. According to the police,the accused,Monty,had an affair with the minor girl. They said she wanted to marry him but her parents asked her to wait for two years. The parents of the girl alleged that their daughter was kidnapped after on Thursday after for work.

Dealers protest hike in collector rates

CHANDIGARH: Property Consultants Association,Chandigarh,on Saturday expressed concerns regarding the increase in the collector rates by the Chandigarh administration,which has led to the downfall in the market. In a press conference organised by the association,the chairman,J D Gupta said,“The officials of Chandigarh administration had increased the collector rate an year ago after which the market property rates fell by 3.5 per cent. Now,they have increased the collector rates to 50 per cent without any concrete reasons. This is not at all justifiable.”
