The Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police claimed to have achieved a major breakthrough as its sleuths arrested a dreaded terrorist,Sher Singh Shera,a resident of Bhutal Kalan village in Sangrur district,and recovered an AK-47 rifle and a large quantity of ammunition. The police said Shera was involved in various bomb blast cases in Panipat,Kurukshetra,Delhi,Kaithal and Chandigarh in the past and was an associate of another terrorist Sukhdev Singh Sukha,who was recently arrested here with RDX and arms.
DSP Counter Intelligence Navjot Singh,who led the team that made the arrest,said Shera was also involved in the Burail jailbreak case in which Beant Singh assassination accused Jagtar Singh Hawara had escaped from the jail. He was earlier arrested in connection with some of these cases and had served a jail term for over six years, said the DSP.
Shera was involved in the blast that took place in Delhis Chandni Chowk area on June 3,1999,in which 23 persons has sustained serious injuries.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG),Counter Intelligence,Jalandhar Zone,Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said Shera was arrested with three magazines and 72 live cartridges,besides an AK-47. He said the recovered AK-47 was part of a consignment of AK-47s and AK- 56s recovered from Chira,another terrorist who was instrumental in planting 2 kg RDX in a car at Amritsar a couple of months ago.
