Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Tarn Taran, Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal, passed away late Thursday night at a private hospital in Amritsar. He was reportedly battling cancer and was admitted to Fortis Hospital after his condition deteriorated.

Dr Sohal, 66, was serving his first term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and had been associated with public service both as a doctor and a political activist. His death drew condolences from across the political spectrum, with senior AAP leaders including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressing grief.

Mann posted on X: “Received the sad news of the sudden demise of our party’s respected MLA from Tarn Taran, Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal. Deeply saddened. Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha described Dr Sohal as “an honest leader who consistently worked for the people and earned respect beyond political boundaries”.

Born in 1958, Dr Sohal was an ophthalmologist by profession. He began his medical career in 1986 with a posting at the government hospital in Mianwind and later served at the Civil Hospital in Tarn Taran. He continued to work during the peak of terrorism in Punjab and retired as a Senior Medical Officer in 2013.

Even before entering formal politics, he was known for his activism—going on a hunger strike to demand district status for Tarn Taran and founding a Parents’ Association to protest arbitrary school fee hikes.
