First things first. Contrary to its name, this isnt a beauty title! But the feeling of being crowned one is just the same, quipped the lady toting a sash that introduced her as the reigning Apimondia Honey Queen. For those like us wondering what thats all about, the winner takes us through. Apimondia is an International Federation of Beekeepers Association and has members from 61 countries. This organization conducts an international conference every alternate year and this year, more than 10,000 delegates from more than 100 countries participated in the event held in Montpellier in France this September, explains Reetu Kapoor, the director of the Ludhiana-based company,Kashmir Apiaries. Its during this global event that the Apimondia Honey Queen competition was held and Kapoor bagged the winning title.
The competition saw participants from many countries and we had to outline beekeeping activities in an essay as well as make a marketing presentation, explains Kapoor who is the daughter of Jagjit Singh Kapoor, icon of Indias beekeeping industry. To win the title of World Honey Queen, competitors were evaluated for their professionalism, poise, speaking skills and skills to interact with people. It was followed by individual interviews with a panel of judges in which questions related to a candidates knowledge of honeybees, beekeeping and honey were asked. Luckily for me,I scored well, Kapoor smiled to say. She has her family to thank for that. They have all been actively engaged in the beekeeping industry for three decades now,so answering those questions came easy, she admits. Apart from her father,Reetus mother and two brothers are successful beekeepers. Collectively they own more than 25,000 honeybee colonies and the company is the largest producer, processor and exporters of honey from India and have also established group of companies related to beekeeping and honey business. As far as future plans go for the 20-something,Kapoor wants to b(e)e busy all through! I will continue to work with my father and make sure we become the worlds number one honey producer, signs off the young entrepreneur.
