The Shiromani Akali Dal has amply rewarded loyalists of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, with them bagging three seats in Ludhiana as per the first list of candidates announced by the party on Friday.
While Ludhiana South has been given to Balwinder Singh Bains, who is also a SAD(B) SGPC member,Dhaka ticket has been given to Manpreet Singh Ayali. Former MP Sharanjeet Singh Dhillon will contest from Sahnewal.
The story of the Bains brothers gets an interesting twist,as there were speculations that Ludhiana South will be given to Simerjeet Singh Bains. But it was Balwinder who was finally given the seat.
After the infamous clash between Simerjeet and then Ludhiana Central tehsildar Gurjinder Singh Benipal in June 2009,Simerjeet had to stay in jail for over six months.
The Bains brothers nursed a grudge as the chief minister and his deputy did not come to their rescue.
However, the ice was broken by Sukhbir who brought the Bains brothers back into the limelight.
The brothers, known to be Sukhbir loyalists, are an integral part of his youth brigade.
Similarly Manpreet Singh Ayali,a young leader who heads the zila parishad, has worked relentlessly for over a year now to ensure that each rally held by his party in the region was attended by many. Leaders like Ranjit Singh Talwandi had pressurised both the CM and Sukhbir for the seat, but finally Ayali won.
Whenever asked whether he expected to get a seat over other older leaders,Ayalis diplomatic reply was I will do any duty that the party assigns me. If the party wants me to fight the elections I will do that and if the party wants me to campaign for someone else,I will do that too.
Former MP Sharnjeet Singh Dhillon suddenly shot to fame in 2004 when he was asked by Sukhbir to fight the Lok Sabha elections against the Congress Manish Tewari.
Tewari was a new entrant in Ludhiana but Dhillon too was not a commonly known face. Dhillon won the poll.
However,in the next elections,he was asked to give up his seat for former Congress leader Gurcharan Singh Ghalib, who deserted his party to join SAD.
